Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller assists in managing the financial activities of the Friesen Group of Companies, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations for the Companies. They support the Controller in overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls. The role involves collaborating with various departments to analyze financial data, identify trends, and provide insights for decision-making.

Job Duties

  • Assists the Controller in overseeing the financial operations of the organization and its subsidiaries, in preparing and compiling multi-company financial statements in compliance with ASPE.
  • Prepares daily bank reconciliations and cash flow.
  • Coordinates and assists in the budget process, business plans and other projects.
  • Supports the month-end full cycle accounting duties.
  • Identifies opportunities for process enhancements, implements best practices, and contributes to the overall efficiency of the finance department; works with other departments in recommending and implementing approved solutions.
  • Reviews and oversees tax compliance, timely reporting of all sales taxes and other Government returns and remittances.
  • Supervises and supports the AP & Payroll functions as may be required.
  • Prepares and compiles data for annual industry surveys in a timely manner.
  • Prepares various reports and assists in grant applications and financial reviews in a timely and accurate manner.

Work Experience Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years of accounting experience, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Accounting experience with a multi-company employer.
  • Inventory accounting experience.
  • Experience in agriculture or manufacturing industries preferred.
  • Full cycle payroll and year-end reporting experience preferred.

Education Requirements

  • CPA Designation or in the process of obtaining certification.

Skills Required

  • Strong technical accounting skills.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills.
  • Strong understanding of ASPE, with ability to keep well-informed of and compliant with federal, provincial and local laws and regulations.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; being able to effectively present information and respond to questions.
  • Self-directed and extremely motivated to make positive changes.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel; experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (preferred).
